Throughout the pandemic, WPS has maintained our commitment to keeping our school community safe while maintaining as much in-person learning as possible.  One of the mitigation strategies that has been a key factor in keeping our schools open has been universal masking.  You are most likely aware that the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MADPH) will end the school mask mandate after February 28, 2022.  Public transportation is covered under federal regulations so students and staff are required to wear masks on our school buses.

Thursday evening, February 17 at 5:30 p.m., the Westfield School Committee will review the current mask policy for our district. Throughout the pandemic, the Westfield community of staff, students, and families have been supportive of each other in recognizing varying perspectives.  I am requesting that we continue this level of respect and understanding for members of our community with differing opinions and experiences.  The only way to move forward from challenging situations is to work together one step at a time.  Although we may not all agree with every decision that is made, rest assured that Westfield Public Schools and the Westfield School Committee have the best interest of our students, staff, and community in mind every step of the way. Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Stefan Czaporowski
