The committee working on the new elementary school project with the Massachusetts School Building Authority continued to meet over the summer, and the project is currently on schedule to meet the city’s goal of opening the new school for students in fall 2024, according to a recent update from architect Bert Gardner of Caolo and Bieniek Associates.
The new school, to be built on Franklin Street, will serve students from the area that currently feeds Abner Gibbs and Franklin Avenue elementary schools.
Gardner will be speaking with Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski about the progress that has been made and next steps for the project on the “Superintendent’s Spotlight” radio show, 9-10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, on WSKB 89.5 FM and WCPC Channel 15.

It is finally here!!! Our long-awaited basketball hoop will be up and running - hopefully today at recess. In February 2020, we received a grant through the a Westfield Foundation for Education to purchase this hoop. COVID hit, and all collaborative games were put on hold. Finally, we are returning to normal, and with the help of Mrs. Tolpa's Family, custodian Mr. Somers, and carpenter Mr. Lusa, this equipment should be ready for action. THANK YOU to all who contributed to this effort!

It was wonderful to hear laughter in the hallway and the stories of summer from all of our students. This week was dedicated to getting to know our students in the classroom through games, projects, and conversation. We also began our practice of HEART behavior through our PBIS Passport initiative. All staff take the time to teach students the expectations of walking through the hallways, playing at recess, lining up from recess, and all the other tasks that six, seven, and eight year-olds may not have mastered yet, or may have forgotten after a long summer break. Once an expectation has been taught, practiced, and learned, each students gets a sticker on their passport. Once all classes have completed their passports by September 12, Franklin will enjoy a school-wide celebration.

Franklin Avenue students will finally get to enjoy their new playground basketball hoop thanks to the hard work of Franklin Avenue's custodian Mr Somers and Mrs. Tolpa's family. Mr. Somers dug the four foot hole, and on Sunday Mrs. Tolpa's family spent hours mixing over 1600 pounds of cement and completing the foundation for the hoop. Once the cement had cured, the basketball hoop will be put into place by the WPS custodial team. Thank you Kevin and Caden Matuszczak and Andy and Wendy Touchette for making this addition to our playground possible.
