Community
Spanning 47.3 square miles, Westfield School District serves the educational needs of the city of Westfield in Hampden County, Massachusetts. The district enjoys a diversified economic base. Currently, the district consists of two high schools, two middle schools and seven elementary schools utilizing a K–5, 6–8, 9–12 grade-level configuration. The student body is culturally diverse with a population that is 3.1% Hispanic, 2.4% African American, 91.7% White, and 1.4% Asian and 1% Multi-Race, Non Hispanic. The Westfield Athenaeum began in the 1860’s and continues to serve as the public library for all residents. The city is also home to Westfield State University.
School
Since 1911, Westfield has recognized career and technical education as an integral part of its public school system. WTA is a selective secondary vocational four-year public high school enrolling over 500 students in grades 9–12 across twelve career majors. WTA is serving students of Westfield plus many other cities and towns in Western Massachusetts. WTA is accredited by the National Association for College Admission Counseling and all of its programs operate under MGL Chapter 74 and the auspices of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Academic classes and career major classes are delivered on a weekly rotating system (one week academic, one week career major).
Curriculum
Information Technology offers the AP® Computer Science A and Computer Science Principles courses. Challenging academic courses include Physics, Chemistry, Honors English, and Pre-Calculus.
Twelve Career Technical Programs Include: Allied Health, Arts and Communication, Automotive Technology, Aviation Maintenance Technology, Business Technology, Collision Technology, Construction Technology, Culinary Arts, Electrical Wiring, Horticulture Technology, Information Technology, and Manufacturing Technology.
Dual enrollment at local colleges and universities is available to eligible students.
In addition to a high school diploma, graduating seniors can are eligible for industry credentials and some earn college credits through their high school experience due to articulation agreements with local colleges/universities.
The Cooperative Education program allows qualifying juniors and seniors to work for pay in their field of study approximately forty hours a week during shop week.
Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculation
GPA is weighted and a passing grade is 60% on 100 point scale. Grades are reported numerically with 90-100 qualifying for an A, 80-89 qualifying for a B, 70-79 qualifying for a C, and 60-69 qualifying for a D. Beginning with grade nine, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation. A minimum of 32 credits is required for graduation.
Standardized Test Results:
2% of the class of 2017 took the SAT and 1% of the class took ACT.
Average compiled SAT score was 1000 and the average ACT score was a 25.
