The city will hold a formal groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, for the as-yet-unnamed new elementary school under construction at 133 Franklin St., Westfield. The project actually broke ground in late April 2023 and has an anticipated completion date of November 2024, according to a recent update released by P3 Project Planning Professionals, the owner’s project manager employed by the city. “While construction projects can experience supply delays, the project team has taken this into consideration when choosing materials and when submitting orders for materials and we do not anticipate supply delays to affect the project schedule,” according to P3. https://www.masslive.com/westfieldnews/2023/06/symbolic-groundbreaking-for-westfield-elementary-school-slated-for-wednesday.html

Westfield PD Reads to First Grade Students Across Westfield Officer Blascak read to our first-grade students on March 29. Students enjoyed listening to “Keeping you Safe,” but the real excitement came when a student requested a tour of Officer Blascak’s police car, and he obliged. We work hard with our community partners to bring wonderful experiences to all of our students, and working with our WPD assists us in developing positive relationships with our community helpers.

During the Westfield School Committee meeting on April 3, Franklin Avenue Elementary School fourth grade teachers Annalise Eak and Jean Brown and their students talked about “zones of regulation,” a social-emotional learning system based on colors that the school has incorporated this year. Eak said the zones are a self-regulation strategy that separates everything students can feel into four colors. She said the strategy is from a professional development training on how to identify emotions, which is the hardest part for students to do, and what to do with those feelings. She said Franklin Avenue has been using the tools successfully with all types of learning for all of the students in the school. https://www.masslive.com/news/2023/04/elementary-students-teach-school-committee-reps-how-to-get-back-in-the-zone.html
