Bram Moreinis, a new computer science teacher at Westfield High School, has brought with him a tech internship program he developed during his teaching career called “Free Web Clinic,” in which students develop websites for small businesses and community-based organizations. The WHS Free Web Clinic is a work-based learning project within the school’s computer science program of studies, where students design and manage individual and group projects. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.

Westfield High School Instrumental Music Director Patrick Kennedy recently announced all are welcome to the annual Winter Band Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, in the auditorium at the high school, at 177 Montgomery Road, Westfield. The concert will feature the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble and the Westfield High School Band. Westfield High school counselor Patricia Healy, who is now in charge of the school’s Career Center, said she has an open door policy for students. “Kids just walk in, that’s the purpose of it.” She said when she’s not available, her email address is displayed on her door. “A student walks in the door and says I want to work - I need a job. That’s the start of it,” Healy said. She will give the students information on available jobs in the community, businesses like Dunkin’, McDonald’s, T.J. School principals and business leaders brainstormed about how they can help students prepare for careers at the Nov. 28 meeting of the Westfield Education to Business Alliance.
